Jermaine Lamarr Cole, known professionally as J. Cole, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Born on January 28, 1985, on a military base in Germany and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, he began rapping in his teens and gained initial recognition with his debut mixtape, The Come Up, in 2007. This early work caught the attention of Jay-Z, leading to Cole's signing with Roc Nation in 2009. In 2011, J. Cole released his debut studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. His second album, Born Sinner (2013), continued his success, featuring hits like "Power Trip" with Miquel and "Crooked Smile" featuring TLC. Cole's third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, released in 2014, received critical acclaim and earned him his first Grammy nomination.
