Born and raised in Philadelphia, Jill Scott is a Grammy Award–winning singer, songwriter, poet, and actress whose soulful artistry has made her one of the defining voices of neo-soul. She began her career as a spoken-word artist, captivating audiences at live poetry readings before being discovered by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots. This led to her breakthrough collaboration on the Grammy-winning song “You Got Me” in 1999.
Jill Scott’s debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1 (2000), was both a critical and commercial success and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. She followed with Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 (2004) and The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 (2007), both certified gold. Her fifth studio album, Woman (2015), debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, solidifying her status as a powerhouse artist.
