Kem, born Kim Owens (July 23, 1969), is an American R&B singer and producer. Born in Nashville and raised in Detroit, Kem was a victim of homelessness after he graduated high school and worked on launching his music career. Previously working as a wedding singer and a waiter, he quit all of his day jobs and launched his first ever release titled ‘Kemistry’ in 2001. With determination and creativity, Kem marketed his album to beauty salons and restaurants to sell to their customers, selling about 10,000 copies. Fortunately, in 2003, Motown Records heard Kem’s smooth vocals and reached out to him for a record deal. Motown re-relased ‘Kemistry’ in the same year, eaching the top 20 Top Hip-Hop/R&B Albums chart and was certified gold. Kem followed his first success with ‘Album II’ in 2005 with his hit single, ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You’. The single has 10 million plays on Spotify and and peaked at number 19 on the Billboard charts for 43 weeks. The artist took a hiatus after ‘Album II’ until 2010, where he released ‘Intimacy’. ‘Intimacy’ was certified gold and it’s single from the album, ‘Why Would You Say’ was Grammy nominated for two awards; Best R&B Song and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. In 2012, Kem released a Christmas album titled ‘What Christmas Means’ which was then followed by ‘Promise to Love’ in 2014.
