Gerald Maxwell Rivera, better known by his moniker Maxwell, is a singer, songwriter, and musician who makes music in the genres of R&B, soul, funk, jazz, and hip-hop. He first delved into music by singing at his Baptist church, and by age seventeen was writing songs accompanied by his keyboard. Maxwell released his debut album, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, in 1994. His second single off the album, “Ascension,” went gold.

In 1998, Maxwell released the album, Embrya, which peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200. The album’s single, “Fortunate,” was the #1 R&B Hit of the Year on the Billboard charts. 2001’s Now also hit the number one spot. 2009’s BLACKsummers’night won a Grammy for Best R&B Album of the Year. His most recent album, blackSUMMERS’night, was released in 2016. Maxwell’s music has been inspired by artists like Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder.
