About One Direction
Formed in 2010 after all auditioning individually for the X Factor, a televised British singing competition, One Direction is comprised of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson. The name “One Direction” was the idea of Styles, and the boys placed third in the competition. They were quickly signed to Syco Records, and released their debut single “What Makes You Beautiful” in 2011, which shot to the top slot on the UK Singles Chart and was recognized as the single with the most preorders ever in Sony Music Entertainment. The single also sold more than 4 million copies in the United States. They released their album entitled Up All Night to much critical acclaim in 2012, and charted vary highly in over fifteen countries, and has sold more than 3 million copies internationally.
One Direction released their sophomore album Take Me Home in late 2012, featuring the number one single “Live While We’re Young”. The album sold just under 600,000 copies the week it was released in the United States. The young men also released a documentary of their origins and their life as musicians, titled One Direction: This Is Us, which was followed by their third album Midnight Memories. The movie grossed around $60 million internationally. Later in 2013, it was announced that One Direction would be partnering with Office Depot to introduce a line of school supplies, the proceeds of which would go to an anti-bullying campaign; they have since raised more than $1 million.
