Slick Rick, born Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters, is a London-born rapper who moved The Bronx at a young age, where he would begin his career as one of the most influential rappers of all time. Teaming up with Doug E. Fresh in 1984, the two released the split single “The Show/La Di Da Di,” to immediate acclaim and national success. The two songs are both revered as early classics of hip hop, setting the blueprint for the genre. Slick Rick signed to Def Jam two years later as one of the first artists on the now-legendary label, and released his debut album another two years later. The Great Adventures of Slick Rick was released in 1988, and immediately launched to #1 of the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Charts, where is stayed for over a month. It is now hailed as one of the greatest albums of the ‘80s. Slick Rick continued to release albums up until 1999, with The Art Of Storytelling, which became his highest-charting album. He continues to feature on other artists’ tracks, including “Auditorium” by Mos Def in 2009.
